Dutch Development Sector Says Enough is Enough

IICD is taking part in the campaign Enough is Enough (Genoeg=Genoeg) to say no to further budget cuts in development cooperation. We ask the government to spare the truly vulnerable in the world who suffer the most from the current economic crisis. Joining forces with other Dutch development organisations, we aim to convince the parliament to vote no on 6 December when the issue will be tabled.
Managing Director Caroline Figuères said, “The cuts aimed for by the Dutch government are disproportional and unreasonable. They will directly affect the poorest people and the local organisations that support them. Enough is Enough!”
The Enough is Enough campaign recommends other ways to realise budget cuts, for example:
- By dividing the pain over a longer period of time. If cuts are inevitable, implement gradually by reducing the budget over four years instead of two.
- By dividing the pain proportionately. Do not compromise disproportionately (34%) of aid through civil society organisations. These organisations are the most effective in reaching the most vulnerable people.
